The Rainmaker's Reality and the Holographic Archetype

Recalling the rainmaker story often told by Jung, this article connects the rainmaker's view of reality with a holographic archetype. In the story, rain comes to a drought-stricken area of China when a rainmaker gets in Tao, in order, within himself. He insists he is not responsible for the rain, though the villagers sent for him due to his reputation for bringing rain. The rainmaker understood a connection to exist among his being in order, the weather being in order, and the rain falling. In the holographic archetype, an essential quality of the whole is present in each part of the whole. This article explores support for the rainmaker's view of reality by identifying and examining the holographic archetype and by comparing it with the rainmaker's view of reality. This exploration identifies instances of the holographic archetype in holography; depth psychology; synchronicity; the sacred traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity; physiology; scientific discovery; and physics, through chaos theory and nonlocality. The article concludes by examining the implications of the holographic archetype.
