An American Dream in a retail nightmare

At 3m sq ft, the American Dream mega-mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is one of the largest new shopping and leisure complexes in the world. The scheme, developed by US retail and entertainment complex operator Triple Five, features a Nickelodeon theme park, a Dreamworks-inspired water park, a 300ft observation wheel overlooking the Manhattan skyline, plus thousands of square feet of food and beverage and retail space -retail accounts for around 45% of the mail's total square footage. Some of the scheme's entertainment elements opened in the autumn and, prior to the pandemic, the retail units were scheduled to open in March. Triple Five now says it plans to reopen the centre as soon as safely possible. As part of our new 'Focus on...' series shining the spotlight on different international markets, Property Week caught up with Sandi Danick, senior vice-president of leasing at Triple Five, to find out what the US retail market landscape looks like at the moment.
