In March 2018, a nerve agent attack on a former Russian military officer and his daughter in Salisbury almost claimed their lives. Thankfully the pair survived the attacks, but the episode wrought significant damage on the economy of the medieval city, which was thrust into the limelight for all the wrong reasons. It took almost a year for the city to be declared free from the nerve agent following an extensive clean-up operation that saw large parts of the centre cordoned off for long periods. Retail and tourist footfall fell and the council was forced to step in to help local businesses survive.
