There's a new mayor at City Hall, a new deputy mayor for housing and a fresh push for affordable homes. But one thing that hasn't changed is Tom Copley (pictured), Labour's housing spokesman in City Hall, who remains as outspoken as ever. He talks to Property Week about rent controls, boosting build-to-rent (BTR) and making sure developers don't "take the piss". How heavily do you think mayor Sadiq Khan will push for 50% affordable housing on developments? It's a target, not a requirement. I'd love it if we had free rein over the planning system and could impose very stringent requirements, which would then cause land prices to take that into account. But that's not within the mayor's power.
