Market conditions that have made life tough for developers have opened up an opportunity for Premier Inn. The Whitbread-owned budget hotel group has recently committed to nine sites in Hampshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex (box, right). Premier Inn operates 650 hotels in the UK and Ireland. The brand aims to increase its total number of bedrooms from 53,000 to 75,000 by 2018, opening 30 hotels a year. John Bates, Premier Inn's head of acquisitions for UK and Ireland, says the growth is driven by an increased consumer preference for branded hotel accommodation, and there is always demand for more rooms in the prosperous towns of the south-east.
