As the deadline looms for outlawing the use of R22 gas in air conditioning and other systems, the question of when and how to replace it is becoming a hot topic (professional, 31.08.12). There are likely to be big costs, and determining who is responsible - and who should pay - for replacement will be a big job for lawyers and surveyors. The background to the R22 phase-out stretches back to 2000. The Ozone Regulations came into force on 1 October that year, banning the refrigerant gas R22 from new plant and systems from 2004 because of its damaging impact on the ozone layer.
