We have probably got used to spending a disproportionate amount of our time separating one sort of refuse from another, leaving appropriate bins out on the right day, and wondering whether this really does benefit anyone. However, the commercial scramble that is the modern Christmas raises even more questions. During December, "Management" decided that she had had enough of the jumbled kitchen crockery and we should have a new set - never mind that after 41 years of marriage we couldn't think what the hell we wanted for Christmas - so decided to buy a new set for each other.
