Apprenticeships are preferable to 'any old degree'

The fall in the take-up of university places made the news again this year, but there has still been little discussion around alternatives to traditional higher education routes, such as apprenticeships, a year on from the introduction of the government's apprenticeship levy. The levy was designed to help create three million new apprenticeships by 2020 and, although this is great news for young people looking for alternative opportunities, it doesn't address how these apprenticeships are promoted and explained to school-leavers. Historically, apprenticeship programmes have been associated with engineering, construction, health, social care and beauty - in other words, a limited pool.
