University College London: Olympic hopes

London s biggest university is nearmg the end of a six-month exclusivity period with the London Borough of Newham over plans to develop a 20 acre campus next to the Olympic Park. Construction of a 2m sq ft research, accommodation and business hub at the Greater Carpenters Neighbourhood (pictured, below), which is occupied by several large, half-vacant residential tower blocks, would form the second phase of the university's £500m plan to upgrade its Bloomsbury campus by 2020. A University of London spokesman says: "Not all of our activities require a Bloomsbury location, and physical expansion is invariably a challenge within an area as expensive and constrained as [central London]. The Stratford regeneration programme represents a serious and potentially one-off opportunity for long-term growth for UCL."
