As the UK and global economies recover, large-scale projects in major cities are coming off the back-burner. These "big" projects are inevitably becoming taller, but also much more slender. Buildings used to be considered slender or skinny if they were five times higher than they were wide. Now, WSP is working on several slim residential skyscrapers, including one in Manhattan that is taller than the Empire State Building at 1,300 feet, but only 40 feet wide. Also in Manhattan, the Park Avenue tower has an aspect ratio of 15:1 and will be the second tallest building in New York after the new World Trade Centre. In London, we have worked on the Heron Tower and recently Henderson Global Investors' Batman-inspired "Gotham City" towers at 40 Leadenhall Street (pictured) have been granted planning permission. More are likely to follow.
