Landlords could be exempt from rates on empty buildings rendered uninhabitable by last week's riots, the government announced this week. As part of a riot support package published by Communities and Local Government, "seriously damaged" homes and business properties will be taken off the valuation lists, removing the liability of paying rates. A government source confirmed that the relief included empty rates for landlords, but warned the decision on exemption would ultimately fall with the local authorities.
