Dear Editor: We enjoyed reading Jeff Stagl's excellent September 2019 article "Annual Wood Tie Market Update-Darkness Before the Light." One aspect that I should have brought out in my comments to him is that the lack of the 45G short-line infrastructure tax credit has dealt a major blow to wood-tie demand since the beginning of 2018. As you may know, RTA econometric modeling research, confirmed by PricewaterhouseCooper for the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association's Economic Impact Study completed last year, has proven that when 45G is in effect, treated wood-tie demand increases by nearly 1 million ties annually.
