Intermodal volume weakened again in the third quarter, falling 3.7 percent year over year to 4,662,468 units, according to the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA). The main traffic segments posted the following drops: domestic containers, 4.9 percent to 1,915,342; international containers, 0.8 percent to 2,450,493; and trailers, 17.6 percent to 296,633. Looser trucking capacity, continuing uncertainty about Chinese tariffs and tough year-over-year comparisons are the primary factors for the intermodal segment declines, said IANA President and Chief Executive Officer Joni Casey in a press release. The association doesn't anticipate a turnaround until second-quarter 2020.
