In Sexuality and Social Justice in Africa, Epprecht offers an introduction to one of the most searched topics on Africa, and also one of the least researched. While journalists have produced countless narratives of homophobia on the continent, there is a thin literature on homosexuality in academic research on Africa. Early on Epprecht documents just how slight these discussions were up until the 1980s: 'either complete silence, or a single sentence in a book of hundreds of pages is typical of the ethnography and other scholarship written by European and American researchers' (p. 41).
