PSJ: Why is it important for OSH professionals to think about psychosocial safety and health to the point where it now has its own guidance document? Ken: The intent of the guidance document is to help organizations and the individuals who are working on management systems, particularly occupational health and safety management systems, to incorporate the psychosocial hazards and risks that may exist within any organization or that they may identify within the organization. The approach here is to provide the guidance that may not be readily apparent even to a seasoned professional. Psychosocial hazards and risks are a relatively new area, particularly for safety professionals because we have mainly been focused on physical health and risks. We haven't really thought about what the effects of different actions, activities and interactions in a workplace are that may result in different hazards and risks to the health of our workers.
