NIOSH Assesses Nail Salon Conditions

NIOSH has published a report, "Evaluation of Ergonomics, Chemical Exposures and Ventilation at Four Nail Salons," about its observations at four nail salons that identified mus-culoskeletal disorder risk, chemical exposures, improper ventilation systems and other issues. The report recommends measures to fix these hazards as well as ways to help reduce the risk of future injury.A state health department requested help from NIOSH because of concerns about chemical exposures and musculoskele-tal disorders among nail salon workers.NIOSH researchers visited four nail salons to analyze the work-related health concerns and potential chemical exposures to technicians. The researchers observed employees working in positions that pose risks for developing musculoskeletal disorders, such as repeatedly bending their necks and shoulders in ways that may cause injury or pain. For example, researchers observed seated employees repeatedly lifting and holding customers' feet at shoulder level during pedicures, which can put stress on the worker's upper back and shoulders. In the four nail salons observed, 21% of workers who were employed for 2 or more months reported musculoskeletal pain that improved away from work.
