Safety 2011 100 Years in the Making

More than 4,500 attendees gathered in Chicago to celebrate ASSE's 100th anniversary at the Society's record-setting Safety 2011 Professional Development Conference and Exposition, June 12-15 at McCormick Place Convention Center. Attendees were drawn by the nearly 250 concurrent educational sessions on critical SH&E topics, high-profile keynote speakers, special events, networking opportunities and the sold-out exposition, which featured nearly 500 exhibitors showcasing the latest products and services. Some of the seasoned veterans, such as Del Tally, ASSE Fellow and 1985-86 president, came for the camaraderie. "When we come here, we feel like we're coming to a family reunion." With a rousing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by Jim Cornelison, famed for bringing out wild cheering at Chicago Blackhawks games, ASSE's Safety 2011 education program was off to an energetic start. Cornelison also serenaded the audience with a special safety version of "Thanks for the Memories." ASSE also received a congratulatory message (via video) from Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, as well as in-person messages from NSC President Janet Froetscher, CSSE President Peter Sturm, IOSH's Steve Granger and Safety Institute of Australia's Tony Mitchell. "Very awesome!" attendee Todd Loushine said of the opening session. "The perfect way to commemorate the 100th anniversary of ASSE and the 50th PDC."
