I appreciated the Checkpoints article, "Safety While Working Abroad: Assessing and Controlling Risks" (PS, Dec. 2013, pp. 20-21). As an expat living and working for an energy company in the Philippines, the article has some salient points I hope readers and practitioners take note of.rnSafety and health issues rise to the top for assessing personal risks while abroad. I strongly encourage my U.S. colleagues planning to visit here or work abroad elsewhere to do the upfront work of minimizing their risks, such as contacting their local department of public health for immunization recommendations and the U.S. Department of State for travel notifications. Some immunization regimens require several months of prophy-lactic series (e.g., injection, oral) to be effective.
