A Century of Tankers

There are about 3,500 seagoing tankers worldwide — about 20 percent of the world fleet — with an average size of 88,000 dwt. The sea lanes they ply are the arteries of world manufacturing and commerce, and the tanker trade accounts for about 40 percent of world trade by volume. Given the importance of the oil trade, it is a subject about which most people are woefully ill informed.
