Shifting demographics and changes to legislation affecting diversity management make this an issue that managers cannot and should not ignore. Organisations need to reflect the markets they serve as well as attracting a diverse workforce and ensuring equal opportunities for all.rnBut what does equality and diversity mean to you as a manager and to your staff? Equality refers to equal opportunities which means being fair, inclusive and preventing discrimination. Diversity is the acknowledgement and respect of differences within and between groups of people. Most employers are now very aware that they need to have policies in place supporting equality and diversity in the workplace and that promoting these policies will reduce the likely risk of a discrimination claim against the organisation. In order to do this in any meaningful way, however, equality has to be built into the organisation's everyday practice; in other words, equality must become a mainstream element of every part of your organisation's work.
