As record-breaking temperatures swept across the country, a small corner of central London was experiencing a rather unfortunate by-product of the rising mercury. A quiet and inexperienced IT technician, who was part of a project team I was leading, was struggling to maintain his personal hygiene in the searing temperatures. And, as the mercury hit 35°C, he was kicking off an odour as powerful as the sun's rays. It was beginning to affect the other team members. Initially, I noticed nothing, but as others brought it to my attention - casually at first and, after day three, via official requests -I realised an intervention was necessary. With no HR department, the onus was on project leads to take on pastoral and personal management. Accordingly, the unfortunate task of serving KO to the BO fell to me.
