Slightly shame-faced I admit to Anne Garrett, the new managing director and chief executive of ERA Technology, that before we met, I had harboured grim thoughts about interviewing her. Truth be, I was a trifle apprehensive at the prospect of 47-year-old Garrett after reading her CV. Not only is she a mathematician and businesswoman, but she also sails highly successfully in Dragon-class races. Colleagues concur that she is obviously very intelligent and that she is young to have reached such a responsible position. Wrongly, there is still sometimes an automatic reaction to look on such people with slight trepidation.
