Easier ways to make a packet

Improvements in packaging machinery have tended to be fairly haphazard. But now a more scientific approach could clarify the way forward for a new generation of equipment. Design techniques, technologies and methods common in the aerospace and automotive industries are being used to improve the design of packaging machines in a two-year, £570,000 Link project. The project's aim is not to introduce radical changes in this generation of machinery, which has been found on the whole to be running at nearly optimum levels. Rather it is to demonstrate how computer techniques can improve critical performance factors such as speed and vibration while allowing design methodologies to be developed for the next generation of packaging machines.
