The overly loud television set is a bane of modern life. But increasingly it is an issue that can be out of the viewer's control. While the main terrestrial channels still have a master control room and employ technicians to monitor sound levels, adjusting them if the need arises, the unregulated digital stations tend to rely on play-out suites, with little or no opportunity for audio levels to be monitored or altered. To confuse matters, terrestrial, satellite and cable services can be prone to the heavily compressed soundtracks of commercials which burst out of the TV's loudspeakers, grab the viewer by the Eustachian tubes and scream "Buy me!".
