Two recent conferences, the dvd Summit in Dublin and DVD Europe in London, saw the first public demonstration of DVD as it was meant to be seen. If the company behind this development, London-based Function Communications, gives another demo, run, don't walk, to get there. I have a feeling there may not be many more. DVD was conceived as a digital video disc that would play in any country and produce the best possible pictures. But its success has been crippled on two counts - regional coding and DVD players being unable to play digital video.
