Acclaim can be as much a curse as it is a blessing. DVD being hailed as the most successful consumer format launch ever raised the hopes and expectations of industrial replicators and post-production houses alike. A year ago even facilities that had previously little to do with video were considering making the sizeable expenditure on an authoring system. Their doubts were over exactly how they were going to make it pay. A new century and a new format were obviously made for each other: this year has already seen the establishment of new facilities, more established companies repositioning themselves, joint ventures and the promise of better, cheaper technology.
