Nigel Turner, Quantel's marketing director, explains why the company will no longer be using shows such as NAB for new product launches. Quantel's business strategy is similar to its rather beautiful machines: only open to a certain degree, and always on the manufacturer's own terms. During the past couple of years the company has finally opened up some of its products to the selected few: Editbox V8 sees Alias/Wavefront's Maya running on Quantel, while plug-in manufacturer 5D is working with the company on its render engine technology. In the newsroom, meanwhile, there have been partnerships with systems intergrationist Omnibus as well as slew of third party commercial insertion companies. It is also in the area of newsroom technology that the application-specific company claims to have embraced NT: journalists' workstations now run on standard PCs but is that enough?
