ILLINOIS AG PUSHES LEAD BILL

The Illinois Attorney General's office is asking consumers to contact their state legislators to urge passage of a lead safety bill. House Bill 5789 would require manufacturers and distributors to place warnings on children's products if they contain more than 40 parts per million (ppm) of lead. The office pointed to an American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that products for children under 12 contain less than that amount.rnThe Illinois AG office is one of the more active state agencies in product safety, including enforcement of the state's recall effectiveness law. Its April action targeting key chains sold at Wal-Mart led to a national recall due to lead (PSL, 4/28/08, p. 4).
