In water-intensive industries such as power plants and pulp-and-paper facilities, it is crucial that the water utilized is sampled frequently, even continuously, to ensure acceptability to the process. Many of these process streams are in hot-liquid or vaporous states, making them difficult, if not impossible, to sample as is. Water-quality sampling is a critical step in many manufacturing processes. The usual way to determine water quality is through wet chemistry methodology, or better yet, to provide a slip-stream to an online continuous analyzer. However, because all lab chemistry and most online instruments cannot tolerate high temperatures and pressures, it is necessary to pre-condition many samples, which typically means first passing them through a heat exchanger — in this case, a sample cooler — and then through some form of pressure reduction.
