A mouse study suggests that mammals may naturally produce morphine in their bodies through biochemical pathways resembling morphine biosynthesis in plants. Previous studies had shown that humans and mice excrete small amounts of morphine in their urine, but researchers were uncertain whether the chemical was produced in the body, or if it was incorporated from outside sources, such as food.
