Despite their preserved intellectual function, patients who suffer from Asperger syndrome and other high-functioning autism spectrum disorders typically do not engage appropriately with others in social situations. Previous research has shown that oxytocin, a hormone active in social behaviors and emotions, is deficient in some children with autism.
