摘要

Proteins can be modified in various ways and at various times to control their activities within the cell. The addition of a functional group after translation, known as posttranslational modification, can change the way a protein regulates gene transcription. For example, the addition of an acetyl group provides the opportunity for histones- DNA-packaging proteins from which chromatin is composed-to bind to motifs called bromodomains on the surface of chromatin-associated proteins.
