Generating antibodies that neutralize multiple HIV-1 strains in macaques

One of the major goals of HIV vaccine research has been the generation of potent, broadly neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) against HIV. Masashi Shingai et al. (pp. 19769-19774) infected eight macaques with a pathogenic simian/human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) AD8 isolate, and found that all eight generated cross-reactive NAbs directed against a different HIV-1 isolate. A panel of blood plasma samples collected from a different cohort of monkeys inoculated with the same virus was able to cross-neutralize multiple subtype B HIV-1 isolates.
