The last twenty to thirty years has seen an enormous increase both in computational power and in modelling capability, so that it is now feasible to model many complex manufacturing processes on desktop computers. However, these developments present an entirely new type of challenge to industry, namely that of exploiting the state-of-the-art with respect to process modelling to optimize and improve the performance and efficiency of engineering components. The rapid development of process modelling capability, from research environment to commercial availability, and the levels of specialization required both for development and application mean that successful technology transfer has a key role to play in meeting this challenge. Technical communication, in turn, plays a key role in technology transfer. This Special Issue builds directly on a recent successful IMechE seminar on Modelling of Manufacturing Processes, where delegates from both industry and academia presented and discussed different aspects of the modelling of manufacturing processes.
