Soil conservation measures with rural road improvements in Kenya

Environmental impacts need to be predicted so that their prevention, or enhancement in the case of positive impacts, can be incorporated into road works. The inclusion of environmental protection measures into the road design, construction and maintenance can result in long-term cost savings. This paper provides an insight into soil erosion control measures that have been implemented on rural roads improvements project in Nyanza Province, western Kenya. The measures promote the need for participation of local communities in addressing soil erosion challenges. Experience has shown that community participation enhances dialogue among various stakeholders and ensures ownership, transparency and accountability in public infrastructure delivery.
