The new Munich Airport

The new Munich Airport Franz Josef Strauss-now the second busiest air-port in Germany-is seen by many a model for future greenfield airport developments. The old 1930s Munich airport on the outskirts of the city was unable to grow any further and so a new site had to be found-especially after Munich became a principal gateway to eastern Europe. An exhaustive series of sociological, economical and environmental impact studies finally led to the selection of a site 30 km from the city. In a triumph of organizational planning, the old airport closed and the new airport opened for business on the night of 17 May 1992. Its twin, widely-spaced runway system and sophisticated aircraft and passenger handling facilities will enable the new airport to play a major part in the European international air traffic system far into the next century.
