Self-Employment in Russia: Theoretical Definition,Practical Assessment, and Legislative Regulation

This article considers self-employment in Russia, which until recently has not been specifically addressed in neither the academic nor legislative fields. The article highlights the heterogeneity of self-employed individuals (who include independent entrepreneurs and people who are hired by others) and provides a brief history of the legislative regulation of self-employment in Russia over the past five years-from efforts to introduce work patents and launch a special registry of self-employed workers, to attempts at instituting a legal definition of self-employed workers.
