Any board shop can manufacture and recycle the etchant it uses. But it's a losing proposition, involving costly chemical processing equipment run by chemists and engineers with a thorough knowledge of environmental regulations. An even stronger deterrent to choosing the do-it-yourself path is the knowledge that a recycling hiccup can shut down a shop's manufacturing operations. Such an interruption came close to paralyzing the operations in every PCB shop in California this summer, but thanks to the foresight of a company called Phibro-Tech Inc., the threat passed smoothly away.
