Catering to the 'Environmental Stewards'

Ford Motor Co. has mandated that all its worldwide suppliers with manufacturing facilities achieve certification to ISO 14001, the standard under which environmental processes and system performance are evaluated. Ford said it will require its suppliers certify at least one manufacturing site to ISO 14001 by the end of 2001 and all manufacturing sites shipping products to Ford by July 1,2003. It's not a little ironic that a company that makes its money by building pollution-happy, fossil fuel-burning automobiles and trucks is taking major steps to see that its suppliers adhere to stringent environmental practices.
