When IPC hosted the International Summit on Lead-Free Electronic Assemblies a year ago, the U.S. electronics industry was for the most part in the beginning stages of making the transition to lead- and halogen-free alternatives. These discussions, not surprisingly, were quite heated. Yet the alternatives to lead and brominated flame retardants continue to be at the forefront when talk turns to the processes of the future. The domestic industry, in an effort to make the transition to lead-free solders an easier one, has since determined the first step that must be taken is the down-selection of the current alternatives.
