The sprawling complex of Shanghai Meadville Electronics includes the main plant, busily churning out volumes of HDI boards, a just-finished training center, and what will soon be the Hong Kong-based company's R&D lab.But what draws many of the 1,500 employees to this campus on the outskirts of Shanghai is the nightlife, which - fittingly - is also manufactured by SME. Indeed, the relatively remote location of the technology zone calls for adaptation by companies that need to attract young workers from the more happening locations closer to downtown Shanghai. The bait: dorms, theaters, and those singalong machines known as karaoke.
