摘要

It's become one of those hoary old cliches of graphic design intelligentsia: "DESIGN IS LANGUAGE." I recall seeing Paula Scher declare that from the front of the room-like she was issuing a challenge for anyone to correct her. She even ended with a long pause and a stare-down (ever been stared down by Paula? Ifs scary). Like it was controversial? If there is one thing we graphic designers believe in unanimously and to a person-it's the supreme elitist importance of what we do for a living. Duh. Design IS a language, yes. It's language of line and color and shape and texture and iconography and on and on; YELLOW means something to us very different than BLUE or RED. A CIRCLE has a very different meaning to us than a SQUARE. A crude RATTY line is very different in meaning than a clean STRAIGHT line. When these ideas are placed in "conversation," we use ail of these elements as language. It's a language that all of us know well and all of us can read fluently. Most of us can even speak it to some degree or another. Only a few of us realize that it even exists.
