Today, despite the explosion in computer-mediated communication methods and usage, in many circumstances people still prefer to meet face to face and travel to remote locations for work-related or personal meetings-even if at a huge cost in terms of the environment, energy, and opportunity. Telepresence technologies have been around for many years, but until recently they have required resources that have made them practical only for specific domains such as military applications and space exploration.
