1. Detailed knowledge of the joint pattern of a rock massiF— the major factor that determines strain, stress, and leakage properties of the rock foundation of a hydraulic structure — is of utmost importance for geological engineering development. Along with the conventional parameters, special attention must be given to a quantitative study of the rock joint surface morphology, joint filling factor, and rug-gedness of the rock massif. The VNIIG can be recommended for that purpose. 2. To study rock properties, rapid knowledge-based methods are recommended. For shear strength analysis of jointed hard rocks, the VNIIG rapid method has been employed to good effect in geological engineering practice. The method can be used at any stage of construction and service of a hydraulic structure. 3. An analog method can be used for examining properties of the rock at the design and construction stages. As a guidance for evaluating shear strength parameters of jointed rocks, one may use the Recommendations that take into account quantitative geological criteria (surface morphology and filling factor). 4. Using reliable and comprehensive data on the rock jointing and, consequently, on the properties and behavior of constituent rocks in the rock massif, one can have routine control over service conditions of the hydraulic structure foundations and take measures aimed at preventing emergency situations.
