A YOUNG VIRGINIA BOATMAN NAVIGATES THE CIVIL WAR: THE JOURNALS OF GEORGE RANDOLPH WOOD

This Interesting Little Book Has been published for the library at the Mariners' Museum in association with the Port Hampton History Foundation, at the beginning of the Civil War sesquicentennial. Retired j ournalist and historian Will Molineux has compiled and edited the journals of James River boatman George Randolph Wood of Hampton, Virginia. Written 40 years after the war, these five handwritten volumes are Wood's detailed recollections of life in Hampton and aboard river and canal boats and supply barges along the James. This is important historical material since little has previously been published about commercial navigation and life on the river during this period.
