Milan rubessa, my father, was born on the Istria peninsula, Croatia, in 1895. As a young man he went into apprenticeships - the forge, the foundry, the machine shop, carpentry and others. He carried a book with him and each shop superintendent would enter how long Milan had been there and what he had learned. One of his first jobs was at a torpedo factory in the northern part of Italy. He was a skilled and dedicated worker, but on the eve of World War I he and his brother Nicholas knew it was time to leave Europe.
