This book came about in an amazing way. In the 1970s Prof. Charles McGoldrick of Plymouth State University, New Hampshire, was repairing his porch. He discovered an old box containing 63 photographs from the U.S. Revenue Cuttei Bear's first summer cruise in 1886. These photographs provided an up-close look at the Bear, its crew and the native peoples of the north in the 1880s. After years of study, restoration and exhibition, the authors, both Plymouth State professors, produced this charming book of photos and notes about the voyage. It contains a wealth of knowledge about the explorers and native peoples and how they worked together.
