Allegheny Energy Supply recently completed installing an adaptive process controller (APC) on Unit 1 of its Albright generating station for NO_x reduction and heat rate improvement. The main objective of this application was to reduce NO_x emissions subject to all stack emission constraints, such as opacity and CO limits, while maintaining optimum heat rate. With three mills in service, the adaptive process controller reduced NO_x emissions by 15 percent, CEM heat rate by at least 2 percent, excess oxygen set point by 0.75-1.0 percent, and maintained CO emissions below 250 ppm. Average opacity levels improved slightly and there were no changes in furnace slagging conditions.
