Industry Transformation Places New Demands on Water Chemistry

The electric utility industry has experienced a major transformation in the last twenty years. Simple- and combined-cycle units now dominate new power plant construction. The latter, with their heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), have proven to be a water chemistry challenge for many utility chemists and operators. Also, the 20-year slowdown in coal plant development has created an aging coal-fired industry that demands close attention to water quality. Meanwhile, improved analytical techniques and focused research has refined understanding of water chemistry and corrosion mechanisms.
