The design, construction, testing, and installation of a system intended to supply electricity to rural communities directly from transmission lines are described. The system comprises a capacitive voltage divider, a split air-core reactor, and associated protective devices. A series of laboratory tests were performed on the whole system, and the main results, as well as the results from a special test setup, are presented. Preliminary operating results obtained since the commissioning of the system in October 1987 are also discussed.
